Lonesome Dove Saga

Larry McMurtry, the author of more than 20 novels, two collections of essays and more than thirty screenplays (including Brokeback Mountain with Diana Ossana) is probably most famous for the Pulitzer winning novel, The Lonesome Dove and it's two prequels and one sequel.

 

In order of publication:

 

1985: Lonesome Dove

This Pulitzer Prize-winning novel was the first published in the Lonesome Dove saga. Former Texas Rangers Woodrow Call and Gus McRae leave their unsuccessful business to join a cattle drive from Texas to Montana. The history and experience of the American West unfolds as the reader travels with Woodrow and Gus.

 

 

 

1993: The Streets of Laredo

In this sequel to Lonesome Dove , Captain Woodrow Call is asked to track down the handsome bandit Joey Garza. He assembles a posse, including a naïve accountant and a downtrodden Texas deputy, to help in the manhunt.

 

 

1995: Dead Man's Walk

In this prequel to Lonesome Dove , Woodrow Call and Gus McRae are 20-year-old novice Texas Rangers. When these Rangers hear that Santa Fe is filled with gold and silver, they set out from Texas to take the city from the Mexicans. Along the way the duo encounter challenges and hardships and come of age by the end of the trip.

 

 

1997: Comanche Moon

The second prequel to Lonesome Dove finds Woodrow and Gus as young men in the Texas Rangers. They recall their days, just prior to the outbreak of the Civil War, when their assignment was to subdue the Comanche to help open Texas for settlement.
